Your Income Tax Refund Status

Understanding a Federal or State Offset...

What is an income tax “offset”?

This is when the taxpayer’s anticipated refund has been taken and applied to an outstanding state or federal liability (debt). Usually neither the preparer nor taxpayer receives notice of this happening until after the income tax return has been filed and accepted by the IRS.
